A man who was hit by a car in County Mayo on Tuesday has died in hospital.

The 33-year-old man was walking with a young girl on Lord Edward Street in Ballina when they were both hit by the car at around 6:25pm.

The man was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where he was treated for critical injuries.

He was pronounced dead in hospital yesterday evening.

The young girl was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged from hospital.

Gardaí say the local coroner has been informed about the death and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem.

Investigators are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision to come forward.
