A man and a young girl have been hospitalised after they were hit by a car in County Mayo.

Gardaí say it happened at around 6:25pm yesterday on Lord Edward Street in Ballina.

The man in his 40s is in a critical condition at Mayo University Hospital this morning.

The young girl is also being treated for injuries; however, they are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road remains closed this morning ahead of a Garda forensic examination of the crash site.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have camera footage.
