A 31-year-old man has been handed a life sentence for murdering his older brother during a row at their family home in County Limerick.

Gerard Lynch, of Main Street, Pallaskenry, County Limerick, admitted stabbing him to death on December 30th, 2017.

The alarm was raised when Gerard Lynch ran into his local shop covered in blood and roaring for help.

His cousin followed him to his home across the street where she saw Willy Lynch lying on the landing at the top of the stairs.

The two brothers had been arguing all day. Gerard armed himself with a kitchen knife and kicked in Willy’s bedroom door.

He stabbed him four times during the fight that followed.

A letter written by Gerard was read out today. In it, he apologised to his mother and the rest of his family for what he did. He said he never meant to do it and misses his brother very much. “I think about him all the time,” he wrote.

He was then handed the mandatory life sentence for murder.
