Gardai were alerted at approximately 7.50am by ambulance control that a car had collided with a ditch and that a 58-year-old man was seriously injured.
There was no one else in the car at the time of the collision.
The man was treated at the scene, however he died and was pronounced dead by a local doctor.
His body was removed to the morgue at Loughlinstown Hospital. A post mortem will be carried out on Tuesday morning.
The road was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision Examination, but has since reopened.
