A man who died after he was assaulted in Dublin city centre on Thursday night has been named locally as Gareth O'Connor.
The 27-year-old lost his fight for life at St James' Hospital last night, after suffering serious head injuries on Cow's Lane in Temple Bar.
Four men arrested at the scene were released this morning without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Gardaí say the victim was attacked by a group of men - and that some witnesses filmed the assault as it unfolded - these people are being asked to come forward.
In a Facebook post, his local football club paid tribute to their friend.
"Terrible news to hear of the passing of one of our players earlier today. RIP Gareth 'Garzy' O Connor. We will all miss you so much."
