A man in his 70s has drowned off the Clare coast.

The man was swimming in Kilkee Bay when he got into difficulty at around 10:20am.

He was airlifted to Limerick University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A multi-agency search and rescue operation was launched after the incident was reported to the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue sub-centre on Valentia Island this morning.

The Coast Guard, Clare Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics form the National Ambulance Service all responded.

The Irish Coast Guard Rescue 115 helicopter was also dispatched.
