A man is in a critical condition following an assault in Cork city last night.

Gardaí said the 40-year-old was seriously assaulted by another on Patrick at around 9:15pm.

He was taken to Mercy University Hospital where he is being treated for critical injuries.

The Garda investigation is ongoing.

Separately a 19-year-old man suffered serious injuries in an assault on Grand Parade in the city centre at around 12:15am this morning.

He was taken to Cork University Hospital.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested.
