A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man was found dead in a house in County Mayo.

The body was discovered after emergency services were called to a fire at a house on Pheasanthill near Castlebar at around 6:30pm yesterday.

When they put out the blaze, they discovered the body inside the house.

A short time later, a man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He is being held at Castlebar Garda Station where he can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

The scene remains sealed off this morning and a technical examination is underway.

The Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster visited the scene today and the body will be removed for a post-mortem examination later on.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone who may have any information to come forward.
