A man in his 20s has died after being hit by a car in County Galway.

The incident happened in Loughrea Town on the N66 road at just after 5.30am this morning.

The 28-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.

The 19-year-old driver and sole occupant of the car was uninjured.

A section of the Loughrea to Galway Road is closed for a garda forensic collision investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
