Most people using the government's mortgage arrears support service are staying in their homes.

New figures from the Departments of Justice and Employment show that more than 11,600 borrowers received support and advice from Abhaile between July 2016 and June 2018.

More than 7,000 borrowers facing repossession proceedings received advice and support, while 4,800 received legal assistance.

More than 30% of the borrowers who engaged with Abhaile have a solution in place or on trial, while a further 53% have kept their homes.

The total number of mortgages in arrears has fallen to less than half of the late 2013 peak.

Responding to the figures, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan suggested that the service is delivering "real, successful" solutions for struggling mortgage-holders.

He observed: "I am particularly pleased to see that Abhaile is delivering results even for borrowers in the more challenging levels of arrears, who are those most at risk.

"Abhaile is undoubtedly making an important contribution to the drop in arrears for this worst-affected category and is helping those who fell into arrears due to loss of earnings, illness or family separation.”

Anyone with concerns over their mortgage arrears is being urged to first contact the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS).

Their helpline is available on 0761-07-2000, and open Monday to Friday from 9am to 8pm.
