A French court has ordered Closer magazine to pay €100,000 in damages over topless pictures of Kate Middleton.

The publication's editor and owner must also each pay €45,000 in fines - the maximum allowed.

The photos were published when she was on holiday in the south of France 2012.

They were snapped with a zoom lens as they relaxed by a pool at a chateau belonging to Queen Elizabeth II's nephew, Viscount Linley.

The photos appeared in Closer in France, as well as the Irish Daily Star and Italy's Chi.

The British royal family filed a criminal complaint for invasion of privacy and got an injunction preventing further use of the images.

In a letter read in court, Prince William said the case reminded him of how the paparazzi hounded his mother.
