The brother of Jack Charlton says the legendary football manager "loved the people in Ireland".

Tommy Charlton says the family have been inundated with emails, cards and calls from people paying tribute to Jack.

The former Republic of Ireland manager died in England on Friday at the age of 85 after a period of ill-health.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Tommy - himself a former professional footballer - said his brother was a special kind of person.

He said: "Thank you for your thoughts... it has been very nice. I've been inundated with emails, cards, visits, telephone calls.

"He was an extraordinary man. He was my big brother, and I doted on him. I thought he was wonderful... from being a little kid, I always looked up to him.

"Other people used to look up to him. He had an aura about him, and people respected him."

Tommy said Jack never failed to offer up a new joke.

He recalled: "He always had something he wanted to tell you... he was an amiable man... he would speak to anybody.

"Jack was always sort of amazed at being very popular and being very famous... he loved the people in Ireland, and he loved doing the job for them at the football. That was Jack.

"A thing I remember about him... whenever we walked in public, if someone came the other way with a child in a pushchair or something like that... he'd stop, have a look at the kid, and give him something silver. He'd always have a 50 pence piece or something for a total stranger's kid."

Jack wasn't the only famous Charlton brother, with Bobby considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.

However, Thomas said "you couldn't find two people who were more different in their character than Jack and Bob".

He explained: "Bobby's a very reticent man... he's very, very insular. He keeps himself to himself.

"Jack could handle anything and anybody."
