In the age of digital books and online reading, Little Free Libraries have become popular with communities, encouraging people to pick up physical copies of books.

The Libraries operate as a box of free books, where readers are asked to "take a book, return a book." There are currently more than 10,000 Little Libraries around the world.

For 9 year-old bookworm Spencer Collins in Kansas, his mini library is under threat.

Authorities in the town of Leawood have cracked down on the boy's cabinet, which stands in the front gardens of homes on his street. An ordinance prohibiting the structure has been imposed, alerting Spencer's family by letter to remove the library, which they have done to avoid a fine. The Los Angeles Times reports that Leawood City Council called the little library "an illegal detached structure."

The city authority states that the law applies to any structure and is not simply targeting little libraries. Despite this, Spencer and his family intend to fight the ordinance as they believe the library induces the neighbourhood to get to know one another and to get into reading.
