The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued an extensive list of products that have been recalled following nine cases of and one death from listeria. 

The ready meals and prepared side dishes from Ballymaguire Foods must not be eaten and should be thrown out or returned to the retailer for a refund. 

On Newstalk Breakfast, Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Food and Health in UCD Alan Reilly described  listeria “probably the most serious” of all the food borne illnesses. 

“This is probably the number one pathogen that invades food and causes food borne illness,” he warned. 

“It’s a bacterium and it’s ubiquitous; it occurs just about everywhere in the environment. 

“You’ll get it in things like fresh vegetables, in things like straw and so on. 

“It really occurs just about everywhere. 

“But its ability to survive at low temperatures really makes this a unique bug for the food industry.”

Listeria

The incubation period, namely the period between consumption and falling ill, ranges from three to 70 days. 

However, on average it will take three weeks for symptoms to appear. 

“The bug causes two types of illnesses,” Professor Reilly explained. 

“One is a non invasive illness and this has the usual symptoms of food poisoning - vomiting, diarrhoea and so on. 

“That’s usually short-lived and that comes on fairly quickly, within two or three days. 

“Then you have an invasive type of illness; which causes septicemia, can cause [miscarriage] in pregnant women and so on. 

“It is particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups; people who are sick, whose immune systems are compromised and so on. 

“It’s really a dangerous bug for those vulnerable groups in society.”

Professor Reilly continued that listeria is particularly difficult to contain. 

“Once it gets into a processing plant - and we’re not talking about the current incident,” he said. 

“If you look back over the last 10, 20 years, the bug has got into processing plants, colonised processing plants and survived in bits of machinery that would be closed and not routinely cleaned out.”

In a statement, Ballymaguire Foods described the recall as "extremely rare".

"We are treating it with the utmost seriousness and are working closely with all parties to manage the situation swiftly and responsibly," a spokesperson said.

"Immediately upon identifying the issue, we informed our retail and foodservice customers and engaged with all relevant authorities, including the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), the Health Service Executive (HSE), and our regional Environmental Health Officer."
