Little introduction is needed for this week's Cultural Toolbox choice - it's the one, the only, the iconic, the ageless Casablanca.

Shane kicked off by describing the film "probably the best-loved film ever made" - a 'bold statement' that surprised even John, who said "I don't know if it's the greatest movie ever made, but it's in the ballpark."

Released in 1942, the film unquestionably remains one of the most popular films from its era. John observed that "saying young people have never seen it, they've probably uttered some of the quotes without realising".

Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, alongside a memorable, lively and charismatic supporting cast, John pointed out "what's so brilliant about it is that it's a war move, but that's almost peripheral - it's a love story."

There are so many iconic quotes in the film - "of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine" - but one of the most frequently quoted lines was never actually in the film.

Dooley Wilson plays piano player Sam, who has entered pop cultural immortality as the subject of the line "play it again, Sam". However, those exact words are never spoken in Casablanca - Sam is indeed asked on a number of occasions to 'play it', but just not in the exact way it is (mis)remembered by so many.

Shane had few objections to John's choice today, and remembered Bogie (and his character Rick Blaine) particularly fondly. He said, "Bogart was always [there], growing up in my teens. He is an incredibly cool character, and he's just brilliant in this film".

John added that it's possibly "the greatest love story ever" as a result of the chemistry between Bogart and Bergman. "They're just beautiful together," he stated.
