Lisa Smith will later this morning be sentenced for being a member ISIS.

The former member of the Irish Defence Forces is facing up to eight years in prison but her lawyers have asked the judges not to jail her.

Smith is the first person to be prosecuted for and convicted of being a member of a terror organisation in a foreign land.

Having converted to Islam before leaving the Irish Defence Forces, she claimed she was answering a religious call when she went to Syria in 2015.

However, she was found to have been a member of ISIS during the four years she spent there.

She was cleared of a charge of financing terrorism.

At her sentence hearing earlier this month, her barrister Michael O’Higgins SC asked the court to consider a non-custodial sentence.

He presented several psychological reports to the judges, all of which described Smith as “damaged” and a “very vulnerable person.”

The reports found she was attracted to bad relationships and he outlined the abusive relationship she found herself in with a man she married in Syria.

He also asked the court to take into account the two years or so she spent in appalling prison camps in Syria and the fact she has a young daughter.

The maximum penalty for what she did is eight years in prison and in a few hours, she’ll find out what the judges feel is an appropriate sentence for her.
