That's according to a new report which was launched this morning by Minister for State at the Department of Health, Alex White.

The report's also found that one in three women smoke, while lung cancer now kills more women than breast cancer.

Kathleen O'Meara of the Irish Cancer Society says stress is a big factor in women smoking:

Kathleen, who is an ex-smoker herself, gave a few tips on kiecking the habit:

  • Set a date when you are giving up
  • Get any support aids you are using ready: tablets, patches, gum
  • Practice saying no to people i.e. "No thanks, I've given up smoking" or "I'm a non-smoker now"
  • Watch out for your health. Watch what you eat, putting on weight, exercise, etc

If you want to give up smoking you can call the helpline for advice and support on 1850 201 203 or visit www.quit.ie for helpful tips and information.
