It has been announced that a new Leaving Certificate subject, Politics and Society, will come in for students from this September.
A total of 115 schools have expressed interest in the new subject.
For the students taking it from September this year, it will be a full Leaving Cert subject in 2018.
It will be available at higher and ordinary levels.
Politics and Society is one of the Department of Education's legacy projects under its 2016 commemorative programme.
It is seen as a subject to help build on and learn from the reflection on past events.
Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan took the opportunity to encourage all schools to get involved with another part of the programme, writing their own ‘Proclamation for a New Generation’ and to unveil them on Proclamation Day, March 15th next.
Ms O'Sullivan said she was delighted that her department had been able to offer places to so many schools for this first phase - and that all other interested schools will be accommodated from 2018.
