At least 60,000 new homes could be built on sites already owned by the State, according to a new report.

The Land Development Agency report is going before Cabinet this morning.

The agency has identified state lands with the potential to host up to 67,000 homes; however, less than 10,000 can be delivered within the next decade.

The sites are located in five cities and five regional centres – all of which have a current population greater than 10,000 people.

The cities include Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford, while the regional centres are in Sligo, Letterkenny, Dundalk, Drogheda and Athlone.

In Dublin, the identified sites are at Leopardstown Racecourse, the Central Bank’s national mint in Sandyford, the Dublin Bus Depot at Conyngham Road depot and Cathal Brugha Barracks in Rathmines.

The ESB site on Sarsfield Road in Cork and Galway Harbour have also been picked out as State-owned properties which could be used to build more homes.

The report notes that there are still obstacles to unlocking the lands for residential use, with some projects viewed as longer-term plans than others.

Meanwhile, Cabinet will today also agree to oppose a Sinn Féin bill looking to extend the evictions ban, which will be voted on in the Dáil tomorrow.

Ministers will also agree a countermotion to the Labour Party's planned vote of no confidence in the Government.
