Junior doctors say the HSE needs to sanction hospitals that require them to work over-long shifts, and until they do strike action will go ahead.

The Irish Medical Organisation, which is representing junior doctors in their dispute with the Health Service Executive, says they haven't been given any concrete proposals on conditions.

The IMO says non-consultant hospital doctors will engage strike action next Tuesday - after talks between the two sides over excessive working hours.

It wants the Health Service to threaten sanctions against hospitals which allow junior doctors to work up to 30 hours per shift and as much as 100 hours per week.

Eric Young is the IMO's Industrial Relations Director "We've been going back and forth and they haven't shown the commitment to address the issue, and unfortunately we're now in the situation where we have to undertake our industrial action and hopefully we'll talk to them (HSE) after that and see if they've changed their mind, or found some way of addressing our concerns."
