John Hume has been remembered as a man who made peace visible to others and gave his life to his country.

The funeral for the Nobel Peace Prize winner was held in his native Derry this morning.

The ceremony heard expressions of sympathy from the Pope, the Dalai Lama, the Clintons and Bono.

Father Paul Farren thanked god for the gift of John Hume.

“We give thanks to god for the gift of life itself that so many people have today simply because of John’s vision of peace, his commitment to peace and his ability to make peace a reality,” he said.

“Make no mistake about it, there are people alive today, that would not be alive had it not been for John’s vision and his work.”

He said that if there ever was a man who gave his life and his health for his country, “that man was John Hume.”

Many family members were unable to travel to the funeral due to the pandemic, including his son Aidan.

Meanwhile attendance in the church was limited to around 100 people.

His son John Jr paid tribute to his father's memory.

“Along with mum, he taught us all our values and gave us all our moral compass,” he said.

“For that we will be forever in your debt.”

He said his father was a man who was rooted in his family and his community.

His granddaughter Aoibhe prayed for those who took care of her granddad.

“We pray for our carers and nurses especially those in Owen Mór who took such great care of my grandad,” she said.
