Newstalk is currently recruiting for a Courts Correspondent to join our award-winning News department.
This is a specialist role therefore the successful applicant will be expected to deliver in-depth coverage of all high profile court cases from the Four Courts, CCJ and beyond.
As well as having an extensive understanding of legal affairs, the successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, self-starter with an ability to seek out stories and provide a fresh view on the court stories of the day.
The Courts Correspondent will expected to contribute authoritative reports, advise on the direction of coverage and create compelling, engaging content for Newstalk's on air and digital platforms. The position will also involve writing analysis and commentary pieces to a high standard and will focus on developing the station’s existing courts related content for an online audience.
Applicants should have proven record of court reporting. A good working knowledge of the legal system and its institutions will be a prerequisite, while a formal training in law would be an advantage.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and managing all news output from the courts for Newstalk, Today FM and the wider independent radio network throughout Ireland.
- Driving the courts news agenda day to day and over the longer term.
- Responsibility for planning courts news coverage and broader strategies with the News Director.
- Live and pre-recorded court reports for broadcast on Newstalk, Today FM and the wider independent radio network in Ireland.
- Attending and reporting on press conferences and doorstep opportunities that are courts related.
- Maximising digital traffic by exploiting the various social media channels.
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience of court reporting within a fast moving editorially driven department.
- Be familiar with and have experience of digital storytelling techniques.
- A strong news sense and judgement and track record of generating exclusive content.
- The ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
