Jim Gavin is stepping down as manager of the Dublin senior football team.

He told the players, management team and the officers of the Dublin County Board this morning.

Since taking up the senior management role in 2012, Mr Gavin led the Dublin team to their historic five all-Ireland wins in a row.

County Board Chairman Seán Shanley says they will be "forever grateful to Jim Gavin for his dedication, commitment and contribution" as a player and then as manager.

He said in a statement: "I regret his departure but appreciate the huge sacrifices he has made over this period.

"The committee will commence the process of considering suitable candidates to replace Jim and his management team shortly."

Before his management career, Mr Gavin played on the senior inter-county team between 1992 and 2002.

He has been in coaching roles since 2003, with the club praising him for "leading the next generation of players at U21 and Senior level".
