Darragh O’Brien has defended Jim Gavin’s decision not to participate in the review into Fianna Fáil’s disastrous Presidential Election.
Mr Gavin won only 7.2% of the vote after he sensationally announced his withdrawal from the campaign, after it was revealed that he owed money to a former tenant.
It was Fianna Fáil’s worst result in the history of presidential campaigns and the party is currently carrying out a review.
However, one man who will not be taking part is Mr Gavin, who has returned to his job at the Irish Aviation Authority.
On Newstalk Breakfast, Climate and Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien said he was “actually amazed” at how much interest there is in the review.
“Obviously, it was not our greatest moment,” he said.
“Mistakes were made - that has been recognised - but we’ve a job of work to do.
“We’re the largest party elected to govern less than a year ago.”

Last week, the meeting of the Parliamentary Party was stormy and one political journalist said there is a feeling among rebels that “fertile time to try and take Micheál Martin out.”
However, Minister O’Brien described last night’s meeting of Fianna Fáilers as “very focused” on key policy areas, such as housing, transport, health and climate.

“I think for him and his family, this has been an awful time,” Minister O’Brien said.
“Unquestionably, it was handled badly - I’ve said that as well.”
When asked if he understands why Mr Gavin is not taking part, he replied, “I do, actually”.
“He’s a very decent guy,” he said.
“He has served this country extremely well; both in the Defence Forces and in his professional life.
“He’s done so much for Gaelic games and this should not be his legacy - and it won’t be.
“I fully understand Jim’s position on this; he wants to move on with his life.”
The review is due to be completed in December.
