Leonardo DiCaprio's new movie The Revenant is out Friday 15th January in Irish cinemas, and it's getting a lot of Oscar talk.

But with heavy hitters like Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Matt Damon (The Martian), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and more, a win is anything but guaranteed.

In fact, if Leo doesn't win, it will be the FIFTH time he's lost out on an acting award, having been previously nominated for What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf Of Wall Street.

However, despite this impressive streak of constantly coming in as a runner-up, he's far from the worst off.

DiCaprio's regular director Martin Scorsese was nominated five times (Raging Bull, The Last Temptation Of Christ, Goodfellas, Gangs Of New York, The Aviator) before finally winning on his sixth nomination with The Departed. He's since been nominated two more times (Hugo, The Wolf Of Wall Street) and he's back to not winning again.

In the actors stakes, DiCaprio is outdone by Amy Adams, who was been nominated five times (Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle), and Glenn Close, who has been nominated six times (The World According To Garp, The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs), neither of whom have won an Oscar.

Looking a little further back, Richard Burton has zero-for-seven loss rate (My Cousin Rachel, Robe, Becket, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Anne Of The Thousand Days, Equus), while Peter O'Toole racked up eight nominations (Lawrence Of Arabia, Becket, The Lion In Winter, Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Ruling Class, My Favorite Year, The Stunt Man, Venus) but he was given the Honorary Award in 2003, so at least that's something...

However, as bad as some of these actors have it, they can't hold a candle to some of the also-rans in the technical departments.

Roger Deakins has been nominated twelve times for his cinematography work on The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, Kundun, O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Man Who Wasn't There, No Country For Old Men, The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, The Reader, True Grit, Skyfall, Prisoners and Unbroken. Number of wins? Zero.

And then, finally, spare a thought for sound mixer and designer Kevin O'Connell. Twenty nominations deep - Terms Of Endearment, Dune, Silverado, Top Gun, Black Rain, Days Of Thunder, A Few Good Men, Crimson Tide, Twister, The Rock, Con-Air, The Mask Of Zorro, The Patriot, Armageddon, Peal Harbour, Spiderman, Memoirs Of A Geisha, Spiderman 2, Apocalypto, Transformers - and not a single win.

So as bad as we feel for DiCaprio, he's barely a quarter of the way to the full disappointment of that poor guy.
