Netflix will raise rates for all streaming plans in Ireland, marking the company’s second price hike in less than 18 months.

The price increases come after the streaming service similarly raised subscription fees in the US and Canada in January.

Netflix's Basic package (one non-HD stream) is going up by €1 to €8.99 in Ireland - the first time the company is increasing prices for that tier.

The Standard plan (with two HD streams) is rising by €2 to €14.99 a month.

While its Premium service (four streams in up to 4K HD) will go up by €3, to €20.99 per month.

Existing subscribers will be notified by e-mail 30 days before the change comes into effect, depending on their billing cycle.

The increase is immediate for new members.

Newstalk's tech correspondent, Jess Kelly, told Lunchtime Live it all adds up.

"If Netflix is the only source of entertainment you pay for, €20 is nothing and you're absolutely fine and dandy.

"If, however, you're now paying €20.99 on top of - say - €7.99 a month for a Now TV subscription or a Disney+ subscription, and then you're maybe also paying for Amazon Prime, then you're maybe also paying for a traditional TV package, then you're also paying for your broadband it all adds up."

Jess says these costs could be cushioned if split in a household of four people, but those paying on their own will be hardest hit.

"If it's yourself, your partner and you've got two kids - or you've got two housemates - then it represents good value.

"But if you are someone who is paying that to get the 4K content - you're the only person paying for it, you're the only person using it - it's a lot of money, particularly when you add those different packages in then as well".

A Netflix spokesperson says: "We have always been focused on providing our members both quality and clear value for their membership.

"Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalogue, and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry.

"We offer a range of plans so members can choose a price that works best for them."
