Newstalk’s search for Ireland’s Greatest Hero is almost at an end.

It has been revealed that polar explorer Tom Crean and former Ireland manager Jack Charlton were among the long list for the title, as the station continues to count down towards the final on Bank Holiday Monday.

Over the past week, Newstalk listeners have been voting on who they believe to have made the most significant contribution to Irish life over the past 100 years. The station is undertaking the poll to mark the centenary of the Free State.

So far, it has been revealed that Eamon De Valera, James Joyce, Tom Crean and Jack Charlton are among the top ten.

Interestingly, both De Valera and Charlton were the only people on the list who were not born on the island of Ireland.

Meanwhile, James Joyce was hailed for his contribution to Irish literature, with his most famous work Ulysses bringing international renown on the nation – despite the fact it was considered unacceptable for publication in Ireland at that time due to its perceived obscenity.

While a fifth figure will be revealed on The Hard Shoulder tonight, the top five will only be revealed on a special bank holiday show this coming Monday.

Hosted by Simon Tierney, Ireland’s Greatest Heroes will feature a major panel discussion with journalist Michael O’Regan, Elaine Loughlin from The Irish Examiner and author and broadcaster Barbara Scully.

Speaking ahead of the programme, Simon Tierney said: “The final list of candidates, as chosen by our listeners, reveals a fascinating tapestry of Irish cultural life, from sport to politics and from the field of entertainment to Irish people who have faced incredible adversity with bravery and resolve.”

Ireland’s Greatest Heroes airs on Newstalk this August Bank Holiday Monday at 1pm.
