Iran is getting its “just desserts” for its role in the attack on Israel on October 7th after five senior Iranian security force members were killed in Syria, according to defence analyst Declan Power.

The air strike in the Syrian capital of Damascus killed five senior members of Iran's security forces and a number of Syrian forces.

Iranian President Dr Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi has accused Israel of carrying out the attack.

“The continuation of such terrorist and criminal actions, which indicate the growing failure of the illegitimate Zionist regime to achieve its evil goals... will not go unanswered by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said in a statement.

“The recent crimes of the usurping Zionist regime, which are taking place by violating all international treaties and human principles, under the shadow of the support of the domineering countries, America at the head of all of them, and the silence of the world assemblies, are definitely another stain on the black file of all self-proclaimed human rights advocates.”

Iran orchestrating 'instability'

Security and defence analyst Declan Power said, however, the air strike may have been retaliation for Iran’s role in Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7th.

“Iran is getting its just desserts and it’s also a warning to it about how much further it attempts to orchestrate instability in that region,” he said.

Israel has not commented on the claims it was involved in the attack in Damascus.

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has said, however, hopes for a “two-state” solution between Israel and Palestine are now effectively “dead” since conflict escalated in October.

“Sometimes has to be done for the Palestinians, they’ve been abused, they've been made into a weapon against Israel for 75 years now,” he said.

“But the idea that you're going to reconstruct Gaza and build a state on that – I think that defies reality.”

Iran has urged international powers to condemn Israel for the alleged attack on Syria.
