The new interim Emergency Department at Letterkenny General Hospital is due to open to walk-in patients today following the phased opening of the facility at the weekend.
It follows severe flooding at the hospital in July which forced the closure of the department.
It is anticipated the Emergency Department will be open to self-presenting patients from 12 noon today.
This will be one of the most significant elements of the recovery of the hospital from the floods which devastated the facility at the end of July.
The interim Emergency Department opened at the weekend to ambulances from Letterkenny, Fanad and Inishowen. By last night it was accepting all ambulances, NowDoc referrals and GP referrals from all of the west and north of the county.
Management are now reviewing their timetable for re-opening the hospital to emergency admissions from the entire county.
General Manager Sean Murphy has paid tribute to hospital staff and contractors, saying the delivery of interim Radiology and Emergency Departments capable of managing the workload of one of the country's busiest Regional emergency hospitals within 21 days is an extraordinary achievement.
