The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) says there are 544 patients waiting for admission to hospital today.

Some 391 of these are on trolleys.

University Hospital Limerick and St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin have the highest numbers waiting for a bed - at 49 and 47 respectively.

While Cork University Hospital has 30 people waiting, South Tipperary General Hospital has 36 and Naas General Hospital has 35.

James Gray is a consultant in emergency medicine at Tallaght Hospital.

He told Newstalk Lunchtime that existing protocols to deal with overcrowding are not working.
