Some 132 prison inmates have escaped and remain at large following a raid on a compound in the city of Lokoja in Nigeria’s Kogi state. One person was killed in the attack, which saw attackers use explosives to enter the compound.

It is the same facility attacked by Boko Haram in 2012, according to authorities.

"There were 145 prisoners at the time of the attack. One died, eight have been recaptured and four surrendered voluntarily. The rest are at large," Jacob Edi, spokesman for Kogi's Governor Idris Wada, told France 24.

Officials are denying that the raid was linked to Boko Haram, despite the facility housing many of the Islamist group’s fighters. Authorities are rather blaming the attack on “criminal” elements.

Kogi is far south of Boko Haram’s usual area of operations, but many of the escaped inmates are members of the group.

The 2012 attack by Boko Haram helped more than 100 inmates escape.
