Respected actor Frank Kelly passed away on Sunday, news that elicited tributes from many of those who had worked with him or been touched by his work throughout the years.

Those tributes were lead by the show's creators Arthur Matthews and Graham Linehan, who thanked Kelly for all his work and spoke about how great it was to have such a respected actor on set.

In a statement issued on Sunday in the wake of the news, his Father Ted co-star Ardal O'Hanlon also paid tribute to his late friend and colleague saying it was "very sad news about Frank Kelly. Multi-talented, great comedy priest, gentleman and friend."

"I had dinner with him before Christmas, when he was in his usual feisty form. He loved a good argument (not in a Father Jack way!). As a child I watched him on the seminal comedy show Hall's Pictorial Weekly, which was compulsory viewing in our house.

"Always a very determined, hard-working character, he was rightly proud of his long and varied career. If there was a Mount Rushmore to Irish entertainment, he'd be on it. RIP."
