The number of families waiting on housing lists is around 40,000 larger than the government admits.
That's according to Fianna Fáil, which has obtained new data suggesting there are 130,000 families waiting for accommodation.
It says the figure of 89,000 cited by the Department of the Environment is two years old - and that county councils have only now revealed the current situation.
It marks an increase of 45% nationwide, with a number of authorities having witnessed their waiting list double int he past two years.
Fianna Fáil have accused the government of misleading not only the public, but also charities working in the housing sector.
