New rent supplement measures will make a huge difference for young job seekers, according to a housing and homeless charity.
Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar has announced a cut to the amount people under 26 on welfare will have to pay towards their rent supplement.
It amounts to savings of up to €20 a week.
Under the new arrangement, a young person receiving a payment of €100 a week will see the weekly contribution to their rent cut from €30 to €10.
A young person of the same age receiving €144 or €160 a week will have their personal contribution cut by €10 a week.
Stephen Large from housing charity Threshold says it means more people will be able to afford to stay in their homes.
He explained: "Many of our clients - single people in receipt of rent supplement - have been struggling in recent times in terms of being able to access accommodation or remain in their current accommodation due to increasing rents."
