The High Court has refused an application by The Irish Times for injunctions restraining the publishers of The Times of London using the words "The Times Irish Edition" in promoting a new digital Irish edition of the UK newspaper.
The new daily, digital edition of The Times for the Irish market claims it will be a national newspaper produced by a team of up to 30 Irish journalists based in Dublin.
Richard Oakley, Editor of the Irish edition of The Times, spoke to Jonathan Healy on Newstalk Lunchtime earlier today:
On the court result, Mr Oakley explained the case "was struck out on the basis of the delay in seeking the injunction. The full judgement was read out in court but we have not actually got a copy of it yet, so we'll be waiting to see that and go through the full details."
He also discussed the planned publication, saying a release date will be revealed 'soon'.
"There is a lot of competition in the market," Richard told Jonathan. "We [hope to] offer people something unique, something with a lot of added value, and create a membership.
"We're hoping to bring a new exciting product to the market. We have a lot of added value extras like a sports highlight package that other newspapers don't have," he added. However, he did not reveal how much a subscription to the new digital edition will cost when it is released.
