The High Court is to assess a claim of around €2.5 million against the Coombe Hospital which has been found liable for the catastrophic injuries suffered by a 10-year-old boy in the minutes after his birth.

Eoin Dunne of Malahide in Co. Dublin has dyskinetic cerebral palsy, is wheelchair dependant and cannot communicate verbally. He needs help dressing, feeding and using the toilet.

The court has heard that if he had been ventilated 9 minutes rather than 17 minutes after his birth he may not have suffered the catastrophic injuries that have shaped his life.

Last February Mr. Justice Mary Irvine held the Coombe Hospital liable for his injuries.

Now the court is being asked by the Dunne's lawyers to assess a claim for damages against the hospital for around €2.5 million.

The court heard the money would buy a new home suitable to Eoin's needs as well as various aids and appliances.

It would also provide for his care up until now and for the next 2 years when his case would be reassessed.

The hospital is contesting the among being sought. The case resumes tomorrow.
