The commission of investigation into the fatal shooting of a Real IRA member by An Garda Siochana almost 20 years ago, is to begin its public hearings this morning.

Ronan Mac Lochlainn was killed during the course of an armed robbery in Ashford Co. Wicklow in 1998.

His partner Gráinne Nic Gibb took a legal case in 2010 under the European Convention on Human Rights, but it was struck out after the Government agreed to set up a Commission of Investigation into the shooting.

The case opens for public hearings today, and the evidence of 85 witnesses is expected to be heard over the next two months.

Both serving and retired members of An Garda Síochána, along with civilian and expert witnesses, will give evidence.
