“I can't believe I'm having to write this but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” he wrote.
“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”
Eddie and his brother Alex were constant members of the band Van Halen, contributing to 12 albums across five decades.
The band sold tens of millions of albums over the years.
The eponymous first album alone sold more than 10 million copies, making it one of the best-selling debuts of all time.
