The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will today try to stop the latest challenge by Brian Meehan to his conviction for the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.
Lawyers for the Director will ask the Court of Criminal Appeal to strike out his case which is aimed at overturning the verdict as a miscarriage of justice.
Brian Meehan from Crumlin in Dublin is the only person serving life for the murder of Sunday Independent journalist in 1996.
Previous appeal
He remains in Portlaoise prison having lost an appeal against the conviction handed down by the Special Criminal Court in 1999.
He claims newly-discovered facts arising from the 2001 trial of drug dealer John Gilligan have come to light which will show his case was a miscarriage of justice.
But the DPP will today try put a stop to this latest challenge by claiming there are no new facts making this attempt to re-open the case an abuse of process.
