As international pressure mounts to make new concessions to unlock fresh bailout funds, the Greek government is insisting today that it will not move any further towards its creditors' demands.

The country's prime minister, Alexis Tsipras told Greek newspaper Ton Syntakton that his government is determined to break the country's cycle of harsh austerity policies:

“One can only see a political purposefulness in the insistence of creditors on new cuts in pensions after five years of looting under the bailouts,” he says.

Adding: "We will await patiently until the institutions accede to realism,. We do not have the right to bury European democracy at the place where it was born."

This latest Greek wobble has caused contractions in stock markets across Europe.

Defence minister, and leader of Independent Greeks, the right-wing junior coalition partner, Panos Kammenos has also addressed the Greek media, saying:

"The position of Greece, and the Greek government is clear. For so many years Greeks have been forced to endure misery because of the failed policies that lenders imposed. These policies aren’t going to continue, we are not going to surrender democracy, nor our parents, the Greek men and women pensioners who are now living under the poverty line."

Pension reforms, VAT increases and the country's primary surplus target are believed to be the main areas which have caused talks between Greece and its creditors to breakdown.

Greece’s main government spokesman, Gabriel Sakellaridis also spoke the press today, he reiterated that fresh elections are not being considered as an option.

Leading Greek politicians entered an emergency meeting at 10:00 this morning.

Volker Kauder, the parliamentary leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) has called on Greece to “get back to reality” today.

France’s president, Francois Hollande and the president of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva have also called on Greece to push a deal through.

This Thursday's (June 18) Eurogroup meeting could be the last chance for an agreement to be reached if Greece is to avoid an ugly default.
