The Government has not called an election because they are scared of the public’s “huge anger” towards them, People Before Profit has claimed.

Yesterday, an exclusive poll for Newstalk by Amárach Research found that 59% of Irish people want Simon Harris to dissolve Dáil Éireann and call an immediate General Election

All three parties in the coalition have instead indicated a preference for the Government to serve out its five year term

In response, People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith said the Government is avoiding responsibility for the state of the nation’s public services.

“If they would acknowledge they have made a bags of the public services, they would be humble enough to go to the people and say, ‘Mea culpa, we haven’t done right by you, so you need an election,’” she said.

“But they’re not going to do that and if they don’t acknowledge their responsibility for all of this, then I don’t believe they will change and certainly not in the year they have left [before the election].”

Deputy Smith said the coalition had experienced a “rough ride” since their election in 2020 but said their performance in office has been “hit and miss at times”.

“But I think they [should] acknowledge - and this is what they won’t do - [that] they are responsible for a deepening housing crisis, thousands in homeless accommodation, migrants sleeping on streets and a huge amount of anger about the state of Ireland’s public services,” she said.

An election is due to be held by March next year at the latest.
