Twitter has announced that it is closing Vine, its six-second video app.

The social network said it will be shut down in the coming months, but the website will stay online so people can watch previous posts.

"Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today," Twitter and Vine said in a blog post.

"We value you, your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines.

"We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made.

"You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website."

The announcement follows news that Twitter is to cut 9% of its workforce - around 350 jobs.

The company reported better earnings than expected in the three months to September. 

Its growth has continued to slow down, however, as it struggles to find a buyer. 

This afternoon's statement said users would be notified of any changes through the app.

"To all the creators out there - ”Šthank you for taking a chance on this app back in the day," it said.

"To the many team members over the years who made this what it was”Š - thank you for your contributions.

"And of course, thank you to all of those who came to watch and laugh every day."
