There was no luck for the Irish at the Golden Globes last night.

Brendan Gleeson lost out to John Boyega for best actor in a supporting role, while Normal People missed out on best limited series and best actress for Daisy Edgar Jones.

The Irish animated film Wolfwalkers was also beaten by Disney's Soul.

Two of the biggest winners on the night were low-budget film Nomadland and Netflix's ongoing hit show The Crown.

Nomadland won best film (drama), while its director Chloe Zhao became only the second woman to take home the best director prize in Golden Globes history.

The Crown, meanwhile, took home three acting awards (for Emma Corrin, Josh O'Connor and Gillian Anderson) as well as the top prize for a TV drama.

The late Chadwick Boseman was given the best actor in a film (drama) prize for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

There were also two awards for Schitt's Creek (including best comedy actress for Catherine O'Hara) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Tim Gray, Variety Senior Vice President and Awards Editor, told Newstalk Breakfast the Irish spirit was there at the awards show despite the lack of winners.

He said: "Not only were there nominees - like Brendan Gleeson - but a lot of the winners had Irish heritage.

"We had Josh O'Connor, Catherine O'Hara and nominee Annie Murphy... the Irish spirit was definitely there at the Globes."

This year's ceremony took place in front of a very small crowd of mostly essential workers, with the winners accepting their prizes remotely.

Even the two hosts - Tina Fey and Amy Poehler - were separated, broadcasting from two different sides of the US (the former in New York, and the latter in LA).

Tim said while there were some initial technical hiccups, there were very few mishaps for the majority of the show.

However, he said: "Part of the thing about the Golden Globes [is it was] always party of the year... there was certainly none of that sense last night."
