Earlier this year, at the Golden Globes Awards, The Martian walked away with Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy catagory.
The issue was that The Martian wasn't really all that funny, and it shared the category with some actual comedies, including Spy and Trainwreck.
Judd Apatow, director of Trainwreck, actually commented on the issue at this year's Critics Choice Awards: “I got Matt Damon staring at me right now, after that whole ‘Golden Globe comedy’ thing. We only have one award Matt, that’s all we get. I’m like a nerd on the schoolyard and you stole my milk money.”
Of course, this isn't the first time that the Golden Globes have snubbed a genuinely great comedy in favour of something more "awards friendly" - Sideways beat Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind back in 2004, and Evita beat The Birdcage, Fargo and Jerry Maguire back in 1996, to name just a few examples - but it appears the Globes are now finally attempting to remedy the situation.
In a statement issued by the governing body: "Motion pictures shall be entered in the category [Best Motion Picture – Drama or Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy] that best matches the overall tone and content of the motion picture. Thus, dramas with comedic overtones should be entered as dramas."
So that means no more The Martian's in Best Comedy/Musical, but in Best Drama where it belonged.
Of course, that means that the Best Comedy/Musical category could be left a lot more barren than usual. The two other nominees this year were the also-not-that-funny The Big Short and Joy, while 2010 saw the critically mauled likes of Alice In Wonderland, RED, The Tourist and Burlesque all get nominated for Best Picture by the Globes.
