Tourism Ireland has launched its 'Global Greening' campaign for 2020.

This continues the promotional drive to grow overseas tourism to Ireland.

The initiative has grown from strength to strength, with new attractions and sites around the world - like Madison Square Garden in New York and the Dubai Frame - joining some old favourites to turn green on March 17th.

The campaign helps to generate over €10m in publicity at an important time for decision-making on holidays.

Other new sites to join the campaign include the world's largest beaver statue in Canada, a giant statue of a kissing couple in Amsterdam, the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, Caerphilly Castle in Wales, and even the Smurf Statue in Brussels.

Also new for this year is a 'Green is the new black' campaign, modelled on the Black Friday premise.

It will see time-limited sales offering visitors in main markets significant savings on fares to travel here.

And, for the first time, eight universities and colleges in the United States and Canada - all with links to Maynooth University - have signed up to take part in greening.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: "2020 marks the 10th anniversary of Tourism Ireland's Global Greening initiative and each year I am delighted to see even more well-known attractions and landmark sites wishing to get involved and join our St Patrick's celebrations.

"The success of our Global Greening initiative is due in no small part to the great work that has been carried out across the world by Irish people and the Diaspora.

"I would particularly like to thank the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for the great support we receive from the Irish embassy network.

"The eagerness of cities and countries everywhere to take part underlines the strength of the deep connection that people all over the world feel to Ireland.

"More than 70 million people around the world claim links to the island of Ireland and St Patrick's Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage."
