Gerry Conlon, one of the wrongly imprisoned Guildford Four, has died aged 60. Mr. Conlon had been ill for some time.

In 1975 Colon, along with three others, was convicted of 33 charges of murder and conspiracy. The charges were in relation to the 1974 bombing of a London pub that killed four off-duty British soldiers and a civilian.

It was later proved Conlon’s conviction had been based on false confessions.

Conlon spent 15 years in prison for an act which he had no part in and only learned about from television news reports. Following his arrest he was mistreated and tortured by police for several days before offering a false confession.

His father, Giuseppe Conlon, was arrested when he went to England to find out about his son’s arrest. Giuseppe Conlon was one of the Maguire Seven, a group convicted of handling explosives. The elder Conlon was sentence to 12 years.

He would die in prison in January 1980.

Friends and family of the Guilford Four and Maguire Seven launched a major campaign to highlight the injustice and following sustained media attention the case was referred back to the Court of Appeal in October of 1989. The subsequent appeal saw the convictions quashed 15 years after the original convictions.

The story of the Guilford Four, and in particular that of Gerry Conlon, was told in the Oscar nominated In the Name of the Father, directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Daniel-Day Lewis as Gerry Conlon.
