It is understood there has been no arrest made or weapon recovered so far.

Incident room

An incident room has been set up at Cobh Garda station and a family liaison officer has been appointed to the man’s family.

A post-mortem exam is set to take place on the man's body tomorrow at Cork University Hospital and Gardaí say its findings will determine the course of their investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to contact them.

They are also asking for motorists with dash cam footage who were travelling on the Newtown Road between 8.45pm and 9.15 pm to come forward.
