A Garda has been praised after he piggy-backed a dog who had a broken paw.

Garda Colm O'Callaghan, who is stationed at Ardmore in Co Waterford, got a call from three people who were out walking on cliffs earlier this week.

They had found a dog with a broken paw.

Garda O'Callaghan responded and carried him about a kilometre back to the car.

He was then taken to a local vet.

Gardaí say the dog, named Bailey, is on the mend and back with his owner.

They also thanked the three people involved: Naoive, Oisin and Jean.

Several social media users have praised the Garda involved.

One said: "Ruff for the dog, but thumbs up for Garda O Callaghan", while another commented: "A great photo capturing a lovely story.

"Well done to Garda Colm and all involved and delighted to hear Bailey is back home and recovering well".

"Thanks very much Garda O'Callaghan for being so caring and so kind and helping this beautiful dog. You are a credit to the force", another said.

"That Garda will end up [on] Love Island for his kindness, mark my words", one Facebook user suggested.
