Garda Ombudsman Commissioner Kieran Fitzgerald is in a serious condition in hospital in Spain, after falling while on holiday.

Mr Fitzgerald was appointed to the GSOC in December 2011.

He was previously an RTÉ reporter, researcher and producer.

He also served as Head of Communications and Research for GSOC.

It is understood he fell off a wall onto rocks in northern Spain and was placed in a medically-induced coma.

The Limerick Leader reports that Mr Fitzgerald’s wife and only child are with him in Spain.
