A second woman in her 50s was taken to hospital by the National Ambulance Service and is being treated for serious injuries.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said:

“We believe that the house was attacked by a person or persons unknown and that the fire was deliberately started.

This was a reckless, murderous attack on a family home.”

The house has been declared a crime scene and is currently undergoing technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The remains of the deceased have been removed, and post-mortems are scheduled to take place at Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, this afternoon.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Castleview Park area between 7 and 8 last night, and to drivers with dashcam footage, to contact the incident room, the Garda Confidential Line or any Garda station.

The investigation team can be contacted at the incident room at Tullamore Garda Station on 057 - 932 - 7600, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 - 666 - 111
